Digital Design Daring Destiny

Over the past fifteen years, Palermo has been more than a backdrop, it has been a laboratory, a canvas, and a compass.

In this talk, Salvatore retraces a design-driven journey through social innovation and sustainability, unveiling how digital design became both method and mindset to reimagine the city and its communities. From reclaiming neglected urban spaces through collaborative creativity, like Sant’Anna Jamming, a project celebrated by the ADI Design Index, and Borgo Vecchio Factory, awarded a Special Mention at the 2016 Compasso d’Oro, to empowering digital literacy with Dare, recognized by ADI in 2022, and transforming sustainable mobility behavior through MUV, acknowledged in 2020, his is the story of design as civic infrastructure.

The talk culminates with a glimpse into the future: the launch of a new Master's program in Interaction Design (UX/UI) in 2025, aiming to equip the next generation of digital designers with the tools and ethical compass needed to shape inclusive, human-centered technologies.

A reflection on Palermo as a fertile ground for experimentation, and on design as a means of destiny, collective, evolving, and deeply intertwined with place.
